Portrait of a graduate/learner
The Potsdam Central School District is engaged in an exciting, collaborative process to develop a Portrait of a Graduate/Learner that reflects the knowledge, skills, character traits, and dispositions we want every student to possess when they leave our schools. This work is grounded in our district’s mission and strategic priorities while also aligning with the New York State Portrait of a Graduate initiative.
Throughout the spring and summer, we have gathered feedback from students, families, faculty, staff, and community members through surveys and ThoughtExchange conversations to better understand the aspirations our community holds for our graduates. Those insights have helped identify common themes and are guiding the development of a shared vision for the future of teaching and learning at Potsdam Central.
This is only the beginning of the process. During the coming months, district leadership, faculty, students, families, and community members will continue refining the Portrait through additional discussions, feedback opportunities, and collaborative planning. Once finalized, the Portrait of a Graduate/Learner will serve as a guiding framework for instructional practices, curriculum development, student experiences, and future strategic planning, ensuring that every decision we make supports the success of our students both in school and beyond graduation.
We invite you to review our current planning document below and follow along as this important work continues to evolve. Together, we are defining what it means to be a Potsdam graduate and preparing our students to thrive in an ever-changing world.

Grade Promotion and Placement Policy
It is essential that each child experience both challenge and success from school activities. To this end, the district will make every effort to place each student in the most appropriate learning level for a successful educational experience.
District curriculum guides indicate goals for achievement by the “average” student at each grade level. However, academic growth, like physical growth, does not take place at the same pace or time for all individuals. Certain students may achieve mastery in a shorter period, while others need additional time. Promotion and retention are methods of meeting the needs of such children.
